30+ Years Of Field Day

In the beginning...

I started my field day experience by working with the W9DUP amateur radio club. I was often to be found operating 20-meter CW or running the 80-meter CW tent. In 1980, I was the W9DUP Field Day Captain. Little did I know that 1980 would be my last year operating Field Day with W9DUP.!

After I married and moved to Colorado, my XYL and I went out on our own together, sometimes with friends and sometimes just the two of us. We had a number of adventures setting up stations high in the Rocky Mountains!

My XYL has worked for the Colorado Renaissance Festival for 25 years. During four of these years, I went with her to help her set up camp and to write. It was perfectly straightforward to set up a ham radio station in the tent. I ran it off an old marine battery and connected it to a Hustler mobile antenna mounted on the back of the car.

Field Day in Seattle

Age and work have caught up with me since we re-located to Seattle, and I mostly operate 1E from the home QTH now. But because of the necessity for using emergency power, I've gotten interested in QRP, and this interest has led directly to my passion for efficient and effective antenna design.
