How I Got Started

I was 10 years old when I received my first crystal set. I remember being captivated by the stations I could hear. It wasn't long before I was taking a radio everywhere I went, listening with interest to the stations I heard in each town we visited.

I began taking things apart

I wanted to know how these magical radios worked, so I began taking them apart to find out. I destroyed some pretty valuable radios during this time, but my parents never seemed to get mad. Though they did get concerned when smoke came out...

...and then I learned how to fix things.

Once I had destroyed enough radios and breathed in enough smoke, I knew how to fix the radios. Over the next thirty-odd years I fixed TVs, paging transmitters, audio equipment, cars (oh, I guess those aren't radios!), broadcast transmitters, and even an occasional computer. I've worked in the telecom industry for over thirty years, and have loved every minute of it (sort of).

Now I build and design things

My first homebrew project was a special loop device for AM DXing called the Aircheck Factor. Next, I build my wife a Morse code frequency readout for her TenTec Triton 4. I designed and built a QSK modification for the Drake TR-y (written up in Communications quarterly). Now I research the problem of efficient antennas for small spaces.
